She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hand to the distaff, and her hands to the spindle. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household is clothed in scarlet. She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them; She delivers sashes to the merchant. Strength and dignity are her clothing and she laughs at the time to come.
Ok. That is a long passage almost 10 verses. So I am going to do my very best to dissect this passage and what I have learned from it:
First thing first all through this passage it shows that while she cares for her family as unto the Lord, she is also profitable. She both makes and manages money well. She buys fields, sells linen garments, obviously she has a big part in both making and spending money in her household. To me this is just another example of the amount of trust her husband has in her. Now in verses 17 and 25 it states that her clothing is strength. There are multiple parts to that: spiritual strength which is number one,and then physical strength. If she does not take care of her body then it will make her many MANY duties much harder.
In verse 18 it says that her light does not go out at night, An interesting perception I found on this blog was that it does not necessarily mean that she stays up all night (although she may sometimes), but that she is diligent in keeping her life in order enough that she has enough oil so that it can burn through the night. Verse 20 shows her compassion and willingness to show the Love of Christ to others by helping the less fortunate.
In verse 21 the fact that she is not afraid for inclement weather shows that she is prepared for whatever may befall her household. We also see that as hard as she works she dose not forget her own garments which are made of fabric that back then was expensive (again showing her amazing budgeting skills). She also keeps her house nicely furnished, showing her care for her home. She is supportive and submissive to her husband who is the head of the household (vs 23). Finally she is humble. All through this passage she is diligent in caring for her family, and submissive to her husband bringing honor, and not above helping the poor.
In summary vs 16-25 depicts a woman that is:
- Good with money
- Spiritually and physically Strong
- Compassionate and Kind
- Keeps a clean house
- Supportive and Submissive to her husband
That’s it for this post I hope my insight into the Proverbs 31 woman made you think.
